Mala Pier Dive

pier from land
After the fun drive back from Hana we were ready to do some diving.  This is the old Mala Pier.  It took a beating in a storm in the early 90s.  The end of it started to fall in to the ocean.  There are big holes in what is left standing and it is dangerous to walk on it.

end of the pier
Once we swim past all the parts that are falling there is another 200 feet or so that is already collapsed and now safe to swim in.  Sorry about the drops of water on the under water camera.

turtle
Just like Hawaiian clock work we spotted a sea turtle cruising along.

collapsed pier parts
This is what a concrete pier looks like when it falls back in to the ocean.  It has only been a few years and bits of coral are starting to grow.  It is becoming an artificial reef.

reef shark
Here is a white tip reef shark that was hanging out in the sand.  It is about 6 feet lone.
