Catalina Island

Avalon CA

	This is the city of Avalon on the island of Catalina.  It is ab out an hour ferry ride from Long Beach.  We had a great weekend with perfect weather.  The temperature is a cool 80, back home in Phoenix it is 107. .
	Right off the boat my first picture is this 100 pound Black Sea Bass.  The Kelp Bass is floating above the Black Bass.  The Kelp Bass is about a 12 inches long.  The big fish is about 5 or 6 feet long.  There is another one off in the distance.
	These are my dive buddies.  Dean has the red snorkel.  Steve, the golf pro, just found a golf ball in the ocean.
	Catalina is surrounded by a kelp forest.  This is the "root" of the kelp.  It just covers the rock and holds the plant to the bottom.
	Here are some of the kelp plants "blowing" in the current.  These stalks are 30 to 50 feet tall.
	This rock fish is just hanging out.
	Here is Cactus Jack and Dean in the kelp.

	This is a small Horn Shark.  Look just in front of the dorsal fin and you can see a small horn.  This guy is about 16 inches long.  I gave him a nudge, hoping to get a more flattering pose.  He didn't care and wouldn't move.
	We had a great evening after the dives.  This is the Casino at Avalon and the moon is just coming up.
