Frasier  Island

July 19, 2002

Today we spent to day on Frasier Island.  To get to the island we rode out on this ferry boat.  We rode up top where the 2 yellow life rafts are lashed to the railing.  Down below the ferry was filled with trucks going out to the island.  We loaded on first and then watched as about 35 trucks backed onto this boat.  Some of the drivers had done this before and several hand never driven a vehicle bigger that a Honda Civic.  It was quite entertaining to watch these people back-up the 50 yards or so in their 4-runners and ------.  Then we had about an hour ride out to the island.  When we got there Jerry out tour guide drove us around for the day in this 4 wheel drive bus.  On the island there are no paved roads and all vehicles must be 4 wheel drive.  The entire island is made of sand.  There is no dirt.  All the trees, bushes and everything is growing in sand.

Part of our tour we drove right down the beach.  In a few spots our wheels were splashing in the ocean water as we zipped up and down the beach at about 45 miles per hour.  We stopped, for a moment or two, to see this native dingo.   Below is the wreck of the ---------.  This is a 1918 cargo ship that wrecked right in this spot in 1931.  Our tour today covered lots of ground as a result we spent a solid 13 minutes at this location.  This wreck is a monument to management stupidity.  Give me a call and I will tell you how and why the ship was beached.

Above is a ---- fern.  Its seed falls into the cracks of a tree and just starts growing.  The creek is called Wanggoolba Creek or Invisible Creek.  As we walked down the path to this creek we could see the creek bed but it looked dry.  Even in this picture is is hard to tell there is water running here.  It is crystal clear water and no rocks to make ripples or rapids you can see right to the sandy bottom.  Our last stop on Frasier Island was ----- lake.  This was a beautiful blue lake with, close to, perfectly white beaches.  The sand on this beach was so fine, so small in grain, that many people cleaned their jewelry on the beach.   This is Nina cleaning some of her rings, other people cleaned watches, bracelets, and teeth.   After our 26 minute stop at the lake we piled back on the bus and rushed to the ferry for the ride back to the main land.
